As founder of the ILSFA, I'm the first to acknowledge inspiration gained from the International Game Fish Association (IGFA). When conceptualizing the Int'l Land-Based Shark Fishing Association, I naturally turned to the IGFA for certain cues in various procedural aspects. Since its inception in June of 1939, the IGFA has been "Committed to the conservation of game fish and the promotion of responsible, ethical angling practices through science, education, rule making and record keeping". Anyone familiar with the IGFA will find similarities in my adaptation for the unique purposes of recognizing and certifying world records for released sharks. It is only with respectful acknowledgement that some of those same high standards and comprehensive characteristics are reflected here.
