- Notable Praise For The ILSFA -

I'd like to thank the following individuals for taking time out of their personal schedules to say a few words regarding their thoughts about the ILSFA and our efforts. I'm proud of what we're doing and it's a tremendous feeling when others you admire and respect are willing to share their thoughts.
-Sean Paxton: ILSFA Founder & President

Robert Hueter, Ph.D., of Mote Marine Laboratory and the world’s largest research center dedicated to sharks, recently shared the following comments with me.
“Coastal sharks have been depleted by 75% or more in many areas around the world and even fisheries management has not been able to reverse declines in some areas. Some sharks are even being looked at now for listing as endangered species. Over-fishing of sharks, either in directed fisheries or as bycatch, is the largest source of the problem. Catch-and-release is THE conservation alternative in today’s world of declining populations of marine species, including sharks. Recreational anglers contribute greatly to the advancement of scientific research on sport fishes by providing logbook data, returning recaptured tags and tagging released fishes. Tagging helps us understand the migratory patterns of fish species and there are many more recreational anglers on the water than scientists, so anglers’ information is vital in making these tagging programs successful.”

A few thoughts from the mind of 'The Monster Man' himself, Frank Mundus; an undisputed pioneer of sport fishing for sharks, scientific tagging studies and shark behavior documentation. Frank is also responsible for the largest fish ever caught on rod & reel (a 3,427 lb great white shark), and the real-life, non-fiction inspiration behind the movie, "JAWS". Simply put, he's the most legendary shark fisherman of all time.

Anybody can catch a fish from a boat, but catching them from the beach or in the surf, especially big sharks, presents an entirely different set of challenges. In lots of ways it's harder and more fun.

Only dedicated surf anglers rise to the challenge. Sean Paxton, Founder and President of the International Land-Based Shark Fishing Association (ILSFA) is one such angler, and he has thoroughly researched the long history of this sport from its origins in the mid-1900s to the present.

The ILSFA would issue world records for both "estimated weight" and "actual weight," therefore encouraging anglers to exercise catch and release tagging. This contributes to scientific and conservational research and makes for a responsible and resource-conscious organization.

Sean Paxton is a person highly capable of heading the ILSFA because of his experience in the sport, his enthusiasm and sincerity in honoring the history of it, and for his taking this most important step to secure international recognition for records promoting responsible angling research. He's the right person for the job.

Everybody who does a little surf fishing for sharks should join this organization and help promote the sport and conservation.

Jaws for Sport,
Frank Mundus
